The Train of Sóller

Towards the end of last century the difficulty of communications between Sóller and Palma favoured the building of a railway line, which was opened on the 16th of April of 1912. Since then, the Train of Sóller has become part of Mallorca's heritage. It was taken from San Francisco and its wagons made of wood, iron and glass, have survived the passing of time and the trends of new designs.

The train's route offers some spectacular views of incredible landscapes , which can only be seen from this iron road. After Bunyola, an immense orchard stretches out between the mountains, then the train crosses the Alfábia range through the tunnels which open up to look down upon the valley of Sóller and the surrounding mountains as many as twelve times.

Leaving one of the tunnels one spies for the first time the valley in all its magnificence. Sóller is quite near now, just a few bends and interesting aqueducts will conclude the 27 km which separate from Palma.

From the historic and civic centre of Sóller we can access another charming feature of the area: the Port of Sóller. It can be reached by a tram which was built one year after the train line was finished, and it prides itself of being the first and only tram of Mallorca.
